SOUTHEAST ZONE
We have not stayed at all of the Thousand Trails throughout the country, so my reviews are only of those we have stayed at. However, I will add information for all the other Thousand Trails campgrounds.
Alabama
Hidden Cove, Arley
There are two sections to this park; we went to the back section to the left, which is not close to the bathroom. Our site was a pull-through and I think most of them are. Full hookups with good electric and good quality water. No pet park but they have a huge field where I was able to let the dogs loose. They have a nice playground. The rec hall was pretty sparse but not much was open when we were there (pool).
Florida
Orlando, Clermont
We have been to Orlando a couple of times and have enjoyed ourselves both times. They have good sites with FHU, some are out in the open and some are back under the trees. Bike riding is great because it's so large; pool is in good condition. Activities include line dancing, shuffle board, pickle ball, mini golf. It caters to seniors in the winter. Even though the park is in the middle of a busy city, they have wooded trails where and a huge field where I was able to walk the dogs and let them run loose.
Three Flags, Wildwood
The park has large, spacious sites; full hookups; roads are paved; sites are sand and grass with no pads but with a picnic table. They can accommodate large rigs and offer 30 and 50 amp. The electric is good as well as the water. The full time residents are in the back section and others are in the front. They have a pool and activity center with music at times and a couple of pool tables. They also have a shuffleboard court, pickle ball, horse shoes, and putt putt golf. They are pet friendly with a small fenced dog park in the back.
North Carolina
Forest Lake, Advance
Assigned us a FHU back-in site that was not level at all. Called to ask if we could move next door to a site that looked more level and was told no, the Rangers assign the sites and you have to stay. The water quality was good and the electric was good; had to park in an area next to our site, not enough room for our truck. No cable or Wifi, but TV Antenna coverage was adequate. Picnic table and fire pit. TT offers many amenities: pool, playground, mini golf. The shuffleboard court was in bad condition and did not look used; the mini golf was on a hill and looked treacherous to walk on. Billard table cost $; laundry was reasonable and uses your own debit card. Lots of trails through the woods and an area for overflow to let the dogs loose.
Green Mountain, Lenoir
FHU sites that are mostly level; front sites are small with sites and wooden decks (some look like they are rotten), some of which seem to be falling apart. Lots of hills with RV sites up on them. Sites 600-700s way in the back are open and flat. The walking trails are all into the woods and hilly, but there is ONE that is fairly easy (across from site 132). The water quality is good; electric is good. The pool is green so maybe they haven’t cleaned it yet. They have a nice playground, fishing pond, putt putt looks OK, basketball court and tennis courts look in rough condition – not taken care of. The shuffleboard courts are in bad condition.
South Carolina
Carolina Landing, Fair Play
This place is really hard to get around. We got a pull through site but hardly any room outside for the picnic table. Had to backup to get out - not enough room to go straight through. Electric went out and we had to move to another site, which was very nice. Roads are tight and there are lots of hills. FHU and W/E/ sites; water quality was good; electric good. No cable but TV antenna OK as there are lots of trees interfering. Lodge with billiard table, TV, couch, kitchen, and place for kids to play. Also has basketball, pool, mini golf, playground. There is an activity clubhouse. Road to the beach is steep and there is not much room to get around as there were 2 RVs down there. A lot of the sites in Section C are narrow and the road is steep and narrow as well. Section D is W/E but very nice. Section F is W/E and looks to be run down. Sections A and B seem to be mostly for annuals.
The Oaks at South Point, Yemassee
Very small tight spaces, we did not have much of a yard, but at least no one was next to us. Barely had enough room for the trailer and truck. The electric quality was good as well as the water. Not a very family friendly park as there was no playground; the mini golf course in much need of cleaning and repair; no other activities. There was a nice laundry room and club house with a pool table. They had WiFi in the clubhouse and each site had cable hookup. There was a pool but it was too cold to swim. They had a great 1.5 mile hiking trail around the lake and a small peninsula where I was able to let the dogs loose.
Tennessee
Cherokee Landing, Saulsbury
Got one of the 6 FHU sites in Phase 1. It's a large and level gravel site with a grassy area; picnic table, grill & fire ring. Water quality is pretty good; electric good. Got some OTA TV stations; Verizon coverage good phone gets 2 bars on 4G. Jetpack picks up 3 bars on 4G. We walk along the road where old, old sites used to be starting with 16-1 down to the levy, then wind our way to the trail behind the lodge across from the swimming pool Laundry room is close and reasonably priced.
Natchez Trace, Hohenwald
Should have heeded the reviews I read. Roads are tight; sites are weird to get into; on an angle and not easy to back into. Not many FHU sites acceptable so took a W/E site. The water quality is good but not sure about electric; had good voltage but running the A/C and TV at the same time their breaker popped twice. Had a hard time resetting it. Not many OTA TV stations and virtually no Verizon service (1x for phone; 1 4G bar on jetpack, which did not get us anywhere. Nice looking buildings and lots of annuals. Stayed 1 night and left.
Texas
Bay Landing, Bridgeport
Most of the sites at the park are just W/E and are back-in. The electric was good and the water quality was good as well. The sites are on grass and could be bad if there is a lot of rain. There were no activities going on when we were there. The park is big but there were no good walking trails. There are a lot of cactus plants all over and that makes walking on the available trails difficult.
Colorado River, Columbus
We stayed in the upper circles and found a full hookup among the water/electric sites, so we had no one on either side of us. The bathroom was next door and the activity center/laundry area in walking distance. Some sites are back in, some pull through; a lot are 50 amp so you have look if you want 30 amp. The electric was good and the water pressure and quality good. No Wi-Fi or cable at the sites. The pool was undergoing maintenance when we were there but will be ready soon. Small playground and very small dog park. Nice walking trails all over the park and many deer all around. Only way down to the river was boat ramp which was covered with mud and washed out. No place to walk along river or fish. As with other Thousand Trails, they are a preserve and huge; nicely wooded, quiet and not much lighting. They have a tent area for those adventurous souls since the bathrooms are not close to it, but it does have water and electric.
Lake Conroe, Willis
The sites are mostly back in with a few pull through; both 30amp and 50amp service. Our site had good water and electric. The water quality was good. There was no wifi at the site but only at the activity center. They had a real nice large pool with lots of tables and cabanas off in the grass. Well kept and clean. There is a big playground, mini golf, pickle ball, basketball, baseball field, and activities. There is a small adult center with a pool table and some books. The other center was large with a café and lots of tables. They have a small marina where you can bring your boat and a little beach. They also have long term residents and a couple little communities with cabins that you can purchase to live here. They are pet friendly but do not have a dog park, even though there is lots of room for one. I found a trail that goes into the woods next to the ranger station where I was able to let the dogs loose to get their daily run.
Lake Tawakoni, Point
Lots of FHU and W/E sites; all back-in. Some sites are shady and small; some larger, open and grassy; a few cabins. Water quality good; electric good. Lots of OTA TV stations; Verizon coverage sketchy- mostly 3G. As with typical TT, it’s pretty big with a couple of swimming pool, lodge with games, books, billiards; playground. This one has a huge driving range and ball field. Boating available on the lake, plus fishing. The roads are horrible though and made it too hard to ride bikes.
Lake Texoma, Gordonville
It’s been a while since we have been here. We took a nice FHU back in around the circle. Very quiet here right now. Not many OTA TV stations; antenna NW toward Oklahoma. Verizon is OK; got 2 bars on the phone. Great field to walk the dogs where the hay is being cut. Found out they took the billiard table out because “it was being abused." Laundry is with quarters as well as pay by card.
Lake Whitney, Whitney
We come to Lake Whitney for a week at a time every three weeks throughout the winter. Many of the sites here are out of commission as the electric has not been upgraded, and it has been this way for a few years. Still, many sites have low voltage and you need to watch what is running at a time. We like to stay in Site 99 as it is higher elevation and we can get a lot of OTA television stations. They have WiFi around the park, but charge for it. We only get one to two bars on our phones, but the internet still works OK. They have nice hiking trails all over the park.
Medina Lake, Lakehills
We stayed at Medina Lake TT again in February 2018 and got the same site as last time, site 74. We like this site because it’s kind of on the end but there is woods all around. No one seems to like the site next to this one, so we are by ourselves here. The electric and water are both good, and the site is very level so I don’t have to put any blocks side to side. The only thing with Medina Lake is that we can’t get any TV antenna stations. There are 8 stations that we get, from shopping to CW to ION life with NCSI and one other station running all day. Got tired of them and ended up watching Mike & Molly and Three & a half Men the last night there.
Virginia
Lynchburg, Gladys
Not a huge TT but fairly nice sites; Sections B and C are FHU; it was hard to find a level site as the campground has hills all over the place. The electric was good; water quality good. Wifi is not real good, but acceptable; TV antenna toward Roanoke is good. There is a nice trail around the lake which is part of the Walk the Trails; also used by golf carts & vehicles. The trails into the woods are roped off. I found one trail into the woods but won't go again as the woods are full of ticks. They have a nice activity center, pool, lake to swim in or boat; generally have all the normal activities. Disappointed in the laundry - only one washer and one dryer. They do not mow enough; seems like a full time job. The baseball field is not mowed; nor the field beyond it. The tennis court looks in rough shape and the shuffleboard courts are neglected as well.
We have not stayed at all of the Thousand Trails throughout the country, so my reviews are only of those we have stayed at. However, I will add information for all the other Thousand Trails campgrounds.
